Prof. J D Hunt
Dr JD (‘Doug’) Hunt is Professor of Transportation Engineering and Planning in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Calgary in Canada. He is also President of the consulting firm HBA Specto Incorporated, which has 10 professional staff and provides development support and advice in practical transport and spatial economic system modelling for clients worldwide. He has more than 40 years of experience in academia and consulting – focusing on researching and developing new and improved models and techniques and seeing them through to application in practical contexts where they can contribute to better planning and engineering. Doug has published over 100 papers in the academic press and he enjoys a strong international reputation, having helped develop the MEPLAN modelling system and subsequently developed and applied the PECAS and PATLAS modelling systems. He has worked on transport and/or transport and land use models of London and South-East England, Naples, Barcelona, Madrid, Dublin, Dortmund, San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Sacramento, California, Washington, Phoenix, Detroit, Baltimore, Oregon, Ohio, Sweden, Alsace, Central Chile, Wuhan, Shanghai, Auckland, Brisbane, Alberta, Edmonton and Calgary – to name just some. And he also spent 4 years as the special advisor to British Rail concerning the Channel Tunnel Rail Link patronage.
Prof Graham Currie
Prof Currie is a Public Transport research leader/ policy advisor and Directs the Public Transport Research Group which in 2015 was identified as one of the top 3 groups in the world in this area. Graham has published more research papers in leading peer journals in this field than any other researcher. He is Chair of the Light Rail Transit Committee at US Transportation Research Board and a Board member of the Singapore LTA Research Advisory Board. He has won numerous research prizes including best research paper; 14th World Conference on Transport Research, won the William W Millar prize for best research paper at the TRB conference twice, the only person to do so and the Research Impact award from the Australian Road Research Board in 2017. Graham is an elected fellow of the Academy of Technology Science and Engineering.
Phil is a Chartered Engineer with over 30 years’ experience in traffic engineering, transport planning and urban design. He founded Phil Jones Associates in 2003; the PJA group of companies now provides services in transport, engineering and placemaking and employs around 70 staff based in five UK offices.
His notable projects include the preparation of transport strategies for large urban extensions in Kings Lynn, Telford and Falkirk; and leading on street improvements and urban design projects in London, Oxford and Leicester. He is a member of several independent design review panels, including for Transport for London, Highways England and several Garden Towns/Villages.
Phil has specialised in the production of design guidance documents. He was a member of the team that produced Manual for Streets for the Department for Transport in 2007, a guide to the design of urban, residential and lightly trafficked streets. Subsequently Phil was lead writer on Manual for Streets 2 for CIHT/DfT/CABE in 2010. The latter document extends the principles of MfS to busier urban and rural locations.
In 2012 Phil was appointed by CIHT as joint editor of the updated version of their comprehensive publication Transport in the Urban Environment, which is now being published as a series of discrete topic papers, including a recent review of ‘Shared Space’.
In recent years Phil has been involved in many walking and cycling initiatives, including editing the Welsh Government’s Active Travel Design Guidelines. He is now working on a revision to DfT’s Local Transport Note 2/08, ‘Cycle Infrastructure Design’.
Phil specialises in achieving synergy between streets and urban design, with the aim of creating places and spaces that meet aesthetic, social and functional aims.
