Our insightful journey into Travel Demand Management (TDM) in New South Wales continues as we present our second session in our three-part series which explores how TDM influences the movement of people through changes to transport networks, travel behaviour, workplaces and city planning.
This session looks at the role that behavioural science plays in changing behaviour and the many factors that contribute to how people make the decisions they do around their work commute. We also look at how Transport for NSW and workplaces from across Sydney have applied behavioural insights to design interventions that influence commuting behaviours and provide sustainable workplace solutions.
Behavioural insights provide a realistic model of human behaviour, by drawing on a growing body of research into what makes people take action and why.

1. Travel Behaviour Change at Transport for NSW – Susie Garland, Associate Director, Travel Demand Management Implementation, Transport for NSW
The Travel Choices program at TfNSW shares their experiences of leading travel behaviour change across Greater Sydney and working with workplaces through major disruption projects such as Sydney Light Rail, Sydney Metro and COVID-19.
2. What is Behavioural Insights (BI) and why BI? – Tash Woods and Rory Gallagher, Behavioural Insights Team
The Behavioural Insights Team provide an introduction into behavioural insights, the complexity of changing behaviours and habits, and share examples of how behavioural insights have been applied to change commuting behaviours.
3. Behavioural Insights in action – Cathie Mcbean, Director Marketing Director Public Transport Marketing, Transport for NSW
Transport for NSW’s marketing team discusses their recent Active Transport Behaviour Change Marketing Program and how this is getting more people to consider bike riding and walking.
