About this event
The Safety Task Group’s May webinar presented an overview of the Safe System approach, its holistic view of the road transport system and the interactions between people, vehicles, and the road environment. It also considered the theoretical foundation of traffic conflicts and crashes, and whether the estimation of crash risks might be misleading.
In this interactive session our presenters, all members of the Safety Task Group, will dive into the real-world safety issues and concerns confronted by members in rural and regional settings.
Key questions to be considered include:
- What are the specific safety issues that do not apply to users in large urban areas?
- What are the key challenges you face in addressing safety for diverse groups in your communities?
- What can we do to address these matters and improve outcomes?
This webinar has been developed by the Safety Task Group set up under the AITPM Inclusive Mobility Program. AITPM seeks to increase discussion on the challenges and opportunities to create positive action in our transport community.
Registrations close Monday 16 September 2024.

John Parnell | Associate Director (Transport Advisory) | Urbis (NSW)
John is a civil engineer and transport planner, with over 8 years’ experience in the transport industry, across private consulting, local government, last-mile urban mobility start-ups and construction contractors. John brings experience from across Australia, the United Kingdom and Sweden and is interested in applying best practice from around the world to Australian contexts.
John is an Associate Director in the Transport Advisory team at Urbis in Sydney, working on a range of traffic engineering and strategic transport planning projects that work towards improving outcomes for communities.
Brett Williams | Senior Traffic and Transport Coordinator | City of Onkaparinga (SA)
Brett is a degree-qualified civil engineer, with a 20-year career involving traffic engineering and transport planning roles in local government, state government and private consulting. As the Safe System approach continues to become more embedded into the way we work, Brett is committed towards advocating for more proactive ways to improve road safety both within his role at the City of Onkaparinga, as well as through advocacy opportunities such as the AITPM’s Inclusive Mobility Program.
Having perceived a lack of guidance and support for local government, especially for practitioners working in non-metropolitan areas, Brett has sought opportunities to contribute towards improving the resources that we rely upon, including involvement with Austroads Project Control Groups for projects such as ‘Charting a Path to Eliminating Road Death and Serious Injury’ and ‘Travel to Schools’, and involvement with the Australasian College of Road Safety’s Local Government Network.
