National Traffic & Transport Conference, Perth, 24-27 July 2018

Welcome to Perth 2018!  If you haven’t been here since the last National Conference was here in 2013, the city has undergone some significant changes and you may not recognise it.

For decades, Perth CBD and Northbridge was completely divided by rail lines which created a barrier to pedestrian movements and dead spots around our city. The Perth City Link project involved sinking a significant portion of the network through the city, finally creating a connection within our CBD. In addition to this major transformation:

  • The Perth Underground Bus Port opened in 2016 and is the first Australian bus station with fully automated dynamic bus stand allocation.
  • Perth Stadium, is due to open early next year and is set to be the fastest emptying stadium in Australia. It’s a visually stunning stadium so I highly recommend extending your stay to head out to see an AFL game.
  • Perth is also now home to two Navia autonomous buses which are owned by RAC and Curtin University respectively. The RAC bus was involved in Australia’s first AV public road trial and is currently running public trips along the South Perth foreshore. Curtin University’s bus has recently completed its first trial phase and will be available as a shuttle bus around the campus for staff, students and visitors very soon.
  • And finally, not to be outdone by Melbourne, in the last 3-5 years, there has been an explosion of small boutique bars, distilleries and coffee houses across the CBD and Greater Perth. Whilst I can’t promise Melbourne prices, I will make you a promise of delicious coffee served by some hipster baristas.

Whilst the 2018 Conference is still 11 months away, our Conference Committee has been busy planning, booking and organising for almost a year already. The conference will be held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre in the CBD from July 24-27. The Conference Dinner will be held at Frasers State Reception Centre in Kings Park overlooking the Swan River and CBD. This restaurant underwent a multi-million dollar refurbishment in recent years for a visit by the Queen as part of CHOGM. And on the Thursday night, the closing cocktail function is being held at the recently converted Art Gallery, now called the Flour Factory Bar, just a short walk from the Convention Centre.

As we all know, our industry has undergone some significant changes in recent years and is continuing to evolve at a rapid pace. For the 2018 conference, we would like to challenge the status quo and help drive the disruption in the transport industry. Please join us in this conversation by engaging with us over the coming month through social media or reaching out to our committee directly.

The 2018 National AITPM conference is promising to really shake things up. So we hope to welcome you all to the West Coast in July 2018!
