Meet an AITPM Leader | Reece Humphreys

We talked to Reece Humphreys, AITPM Board Member and President of the Victorian and Tasmanian Branch.

What is your current role?

Group Leader – Transport Analytics at Stantec in Melbourne

What first attracted you to get involved in the transport industry?

It was something I could understand and relate to.  Every project is unique and there are so many elements to it.

Could you explain some key opportunities in your career and how they contributed to your development?

Working on a PPP (Eastlink) for the first time was unique.  Long hours and very demanding but also rewarding.  Working with a diverse group of engineers, modellers, accountants and designers was eye opening and very interesting.

Being part of the growth of my company, GTA.  Firstly was building a team that could deliver exciting and interesting projects.  Starting with transport modelling, branching to transport planning and everything in between and learning all the way has been fun. 

Building a market took lots of work but I enjoyed developing relationships and delivering projects. 

What are your aspirations for your contribution to the AITPM?

I joined the committee in 2011. I have had so much fun and have developed relationships with so many people in the industry that I would not otherwise had an opportunity to meet.  It has played a big part in my career and where I am today. I would like to ensure that the next generation have the same (or better) opportunities that the AITPM has provided me.

What has been a memorable moment in your career? 

There are many!  Being part of the successful East Link team, Comprehensive Cancer Centre, SCATSIM modelling for the RTA (now TfNSW) and now I have enjoyed becoming an expert in transport planning and engineering for Growth Area planning.

Is there a challenge/problem that you have experienced in your career and how did you overcome it?

I guess the biggest challenge has been changing perceptions across the industry.  Originally GTA was renowned for developer and private sector work.  Many hard years of tendering, marketing and BD led to us winning work and building our reputation in Government space.  It was a big team effort with many people adding to the quality of work and reputation.

What are your personal and/or professional career plans for the future?

To keep growing and learning – I am far from done!  I also am interested in seeing what my new company (Stantec who acquired GTA) have for me.  Most of all I still intend on having fun!

Do you have any advice you would like to share to professionals in the transport/traffic industry?

Give as much as you can a go.  You might not fit in as a traffic designer or engineer but you could become a fantastic traffic modeller.  I have seen individuals grow once they find their niche.

Use your industry resources as much as possible.  Join a committee and meet others in the field!

What do you do in your spare time to unwind?

I love sport.  I am a committee member at my local armature AFL club and run most mornings.  I coach my daughter’s basketball team and love watching the Bombers in the AFL, and the Wallabies when they win!

Anything else that you’d like to share?

I am so privileged to be part of a great industry with so many amazing people.  I enjoy people and their stories and the AITPM is a great platform for people to do this!
